What is Fertility Awareness?

Fertility Awareness is knowing when pregnancy can happen during your menstrual cycle. You learn what a normal menstrual cycle should look like, and what signs or symptoms may mean. By noticing these signs, you'll know each day if you are fertile or not. This helps you make decisions daily to avoid or plan for pregnancy.

What is FEMM?

FEMM stands for Fertility Education and Medical Management. It is a symptohormonal method of fertility awareness that focuses on hormonal health. It is based on research from the Reproductive Health Research Institute (RHRI). FEMM teaches the menstrual cycle as a vital sign.

What does symptohormonal method mean?

"Sympto" like symptoms or things you can see. "Hormonal" like hormone testing.

This means the method uses biomarkers like cervical mucus and luteinizing hormone (LH) test strips to identify fertile and non-fertile days.

Why should I learn FEMM?

I can refer you to a doctor trained in interpreting your menstrual chart. They can order diagnostic tests tailored to you, helping you find your root cause once and for all!

How is FEMM different than a period-tracking app?

Period tracking apps resemble the Rhythm or Calendar method of Fertility Awareness. It aims to predict when you are fertile, and it assumes you ovulate each cycle. With FEMM, you are not trying to predict anything. Instead, you learn how to tell daily if you are fertile or not.

This makes it easy for you to use no matter how regular or irregular your cycles are.

How effective is FEMM for birth control?

FEMM is up to 98.8% effective with perfect use. Perfect use means following the method's rules correctly and consistently.
